Taking One for the Team

When it came time to start deciding on Halloween costumes, my crazies quickly jumped on the Star Wars train. Even Spencer willingly hopped on board. Me? There was no way in the world I was riding that train.

I am as far away from a Star Wars fan as you can get. I've never even sat all the way through any of the old classic films. Can't stand 'em. (Though I did watch all of Episode I on a date in college...what kind of boy takes a girl to see Star Wars on a first date? Obviously, that relationship didn't work out.)

And even if I liked Star Wars (which I don't), the kind of adult women I picture dressing up in Star Wars costumes are the sci-fi geeks who wear costumes to conventions. Not me.

Then came pleading from my kids and Spencer. For weeks. Who can resist those cute faces ? I always get so irritated when we come up with a costume theme that one kid doesn't buy into and ruins it for the rest of the family. A light came on. I was the one ruining it for the family. There will only be so many times in my life I'll be able to get the whole family to do themed costumes.

Before I knew it, I found myself at the fabric store trying to figure out how in the world to pull off Princess Leia hair. I'm pretty sure this is the first of my 30 Halloweens that I've dressed like a princess.

Now I have to pat myself on the back. (Not for braving the Princess Leia geekery, though that deserves a pat, too.) I'm pretty sure these are the most awesome costumes I've ever made. Designed them myself. And this set of costumes took a lot of creativity. Spencer (of little faith) didn't think I could make a Storm Trooper costume.

We attended a little Halloween party at church last night. Someone asked where we bought such nice costumes. They certainly don't pass for the cheap (but overpriced) ones hanging on racks at Walmarts across America. And they cost less than half the price.

Unfortunately, we left the house in a rush and I didn't take the time to get some good pictures of all the little details. We got a few pictures at the party. Just know, if I get some better pictures on Trick or Treat night, you're going to have to see the costumes again.

Now you can congratulate me on this achievement.

Katie you are AMAZING! I hope you show us more pictures. My boys are going to be SO jealous when I show them. Seriously!

(And ps. My dad took my mom to see Star Wars when she was pregnant with me and so sick that she needed to lay down. Did my dad take her home? Of course not. She laid down on the floor of the theater. She's WAY too nice.)

You are quite good at that Katie. You could make costumes and sell them!

Love them! Your kids have a way better mom than you did. Like I said before, we usually thought of cosutmes the day before and put something together from what we had on hand. It wasn't until you were old enough to do your own that you started having good costumes.

And by the way, I think you should cut off your dress after halloween and wear it to church :)

Katie, you seriously amaze me with every post of yours. Those are out of control! Last year, Jake wanted me to hop aboard that train but I told him I couldn't because I'm not a neard. The costumes that I made weren't NEARLY as cool. Lizzy and I were Rock stars instead. I really wanna see details because I can't figure out how in the world you made the storm trooper outfit. What material did you use??

I am so impressed. I'm actually very jealous of your family theme this year. One of these years I want to do Star Wars. Your costumes are perfect. I'm totally and always impressed with your creative and amazing sewing abilities.

Well, I'm impressed too. Yes, more pictures please - I'd love to see close-ups of everyone. You are amazing. And you are right, there is a very small window that you can do family "theme" costumes. They'll have good memories of this one.
When I was in high school, Curtis and I went to the original Star Wars Debut way back in the mid- 1970's at the grand Cine Capri Theater in Phoenix. It was REALLY getting a lot of hype. I sat through the whole thing COMPLETELY unimpressed. My feelings remain the same to this day.

MY GOSH Katie! You are seriously sooo good! and how do you manage to make things at half price? every time I try to attempt to do something like that it always costs me more to make it than buy it.
You all look great!!!

Awesome!!!! You are amazing--super creative and super talented.

I am with you about Star Wars. Thankfully we finally have a boy that loves to watch it with Brent. The girls and I could never sit through it. I don't even understand the whole story line.

I seriously don't get how you did that. I am in awe!!!! I just LOVE them. I wish I could afford to hire you. My kids do have the cheapo walmart ones- which I hate- but at least I got them for a couple bucks after season last year. ;) But I would sooooooo prefer yours!!!!

Beawesome costumes Katie. I'm looking at our Betty Boop and Lucille Ball picture as I type (up for Halloween, it's unfortunately not a part of my everyday decorating). I'm seriously considering printing the pictures on this post and incorporating them into my living room though...they're that good. Love you.
