Hear Me Roar

I like to think about myself as a bit of a feminist. Though I choose to stay home with my kids, I don't feel anchored to it or to any other female gender roles. But I have to admit that I never pictured myself hanging Christmas lights on my roof. Maybe I'm more traditional than I think I am.

This is the first time we've decided to hang outdoor lights. Not that we haven't thought about it, but finances or laziness always seem to get in the way. Our kids are growing up and deserve some outdoor light merriment. This is the year of the lights for the Smith's.

I picked up some lights on Black Friday in hopes to get them up over the weekend. The weekend came and went like most weekends do. Busy, busy, busy. No outdoor lights hung. I didn't want to wait until Spencer was home next weekend. Three weeks of Christmas lights hardly makes it worth the effort.

So despite my male gender role expectations of Spencer climbing the ladder and attaching lights to the roof, I pulled the ladder out and attached them myself. I am woman, hear me roar.

I'd post a picture of me feat, but if you saw the small size of our house, the minimal strands of lights used and how close our roof is to the ground, you may not think I'm as awesome as I'm trying to make you think I am. So if you stop by, please don't laugh. Just congratulate me.

Hanging Christmas lights is one thing I haven't yet attempted. I'm counting on Jeff and friends to come by tomorrow night to help out. In the event they look as bad as they did 2 years ago when he hung them (ghetto/white trash), I'm going to either have to learn to hang them myself or give up on the idea.

When your house looks like the picture you posted, I'll be very impressed.

Oh, so you didn't hang as many lights on your house as that castle above! I'm totally kidding because I'm totally impressed that you did it yourself. I don't think... no, I know I'd never ever do that on my own. I wish I could drive by and take a look, you really do need to take a picture and post what it looks like at night.

I am sure they look amazing!! We never hang them, but put them around the bushes and up the tree in our yard- pathetic, I think, but the kiddos LOVE it- and I love that they love it, so lame as it may be, I do it!! Congrats to you!!

You crack me up!! You're a lot more macho than me! I wouldn't dare hang them. If Ben doesn't do it, then it's just not going to get done.

I'm going to pretend that the picture you posted is yours. (it kind of looks a little bit like your house, right?) I think your attitude makes for a great marriage. Sometimes you just have to do what needs to get done instead of who is "supposed" to do it. Way to go.

The last time Dustin put light on his parents house he fell off the roof. So when we get a house I think I will be the one doing them.

Never had outdoor Christmas lights growing up and really don't have a desire to mess with it now. If I ever have kids they'll miss out. We're lucky we get a tree with John's "ba-humbug" attitude! :) Merry Christmas!

We haven't done Christmas lights yet either but I REALLY wanted them this year. I decided it might keep me from moving to New Mexico. Something bright and cheery when I pull into my driveway would be nice! Go you. I have no desire to string them by myself.

Congratulations! I have thought about doing it myself as well, but we have a tri-level and to get to all the levels, kind of dangerous. So thus... we wait till we are home for a Christmas to hang outside lights.
