Roller Derby Queen

In this ever changing world, there remains one constant...

Skating Rinks!

I think about how much I have changed in the past fifteen years. And how much the world has changed in the past fifteen years. It hardly seems possible that anything could remain the same. It's as if time stands still on the inside of a skating rink. Like it's some kind of black hole.

I know this why? Because I spent Friday night roller skating. I got to enjoy a little girls night out on Friday. (That's right...this was not for the kids.) I think it rekindled my desire to be a roller derby girl. I always loved the skating rink back in the day...but I didn't know if I liked it because I truly love roller skating, or if it was all social. Suspicion confirmed. I really love roller skating. It was such a fun workout. I had no idea how much I would enjoy it. I thought we'd skate for half an hour, have a good laugh and get going. But two hours later and they're closing the doors, I finally got off the rink. I've got to get myself some skates.

I'm pretty sure Ashlee, Emily and I were the only grown-ups there just to skate besides the one elderly man that you know is there every night because of his smooth moves on the skate floor despite his old age. Most people in our age bracket were parents of kids at birthday parties. And there were probably a handful of hoodlums past high school age who just can't grow-up...who were there to hit on the younger crowd. Though I suppose that might include us, too...or at least Emily. You can ask her about that if you get the chance. As much fun as I had, I could not be more grateful I never have to repeat junior high.

Not only was the night way past fun, but I crossed one more thing off my 101 list.

And you didn't think I'd go to the skating rink and come back without pictures...

I'm the only one who braved the old-school quad skates...as if you couldn't tell by my HUGE feet. Not only that, but I'm the only one who thought it was a good idea to wear cropped pants skating. It was pushing 80 degrees on Friday. But I didn't consider the fashion repercussions when adding socks and skates. Whoops.

I don't ever really realize that I'm so much bigger than my friends until I see a picture. I'm like amazon woman.

Ashlee got blisters early on and had to sit out a while. But she was a trooper and put her skates on for the last 15 minutes to finish up with us. Thanks for being our photographer.

Ashlee got a bit of a shot of the guy Emily (accidentally?) frisked.

I can't even tell you what's going on here. Emily is posing for the camera and I'm about to shake some one's hand? You just go through life thinking your relatively normal then you see a batch of pictures of yourself...I was horrified when I realized what I looked like skating. But it's proof that I did it.
There were more pictures but they either turned out too dark or too blurry or wildly inappropriate. So I'll leave it at that.

How fun that you did this!! I actually went over Christmas break-what are the odds that two friends happen to do this within a month's time? I definitely don't do it often. Your commentary is so hilarious. I have to agree that when I see pictures of myself I often think the same things. I love it that you did this!!

Your narration did not disappoint...even after I heard it all live in our phone conversation this morning. Looks like a fun time. I'm just glad you didn't break your tail bone for the umpteenth time.

How fun! I don't know if I could even roller skate anymore, I'm so used to rollerblading I'm sure I'd try stopping in the back and fall on my butt. You look great by the way. You always do though!

Amazon woman?! Whatever! You look great!
Spencer just earned "a date" with either Nathan or I. He asked if I would go Rollerskating with him. I was so bummed to have to say no, due to my belly. After seeing your fun pics, I am definitely going to have to go soon!

You go girl! I went the skating rink ohhh, about 6 years ago. It was so much fun. And I sport old school skates too... the only inline I can do are ice skates. Glad you had so much fun!

I love rollerskating. Lately it has only been in my dreams. Oh BTW I am great at it in my dreams! I like it so much that I use to rollerblade daily around our church parking lot with my kids for exercise. I got lots of interesting comments from people who saw me. Maybe it is because when I skate it looks like I am preparing for take-off!!

Thanks!Yes I felt it was time for me to be pregnant too if I had to read another blog with someone announcing they were pregnant and I still wasn't I thought I would lose it. Gene didn't want any girls either... he has four brothers no sisters and said not only would he not know what to do with a girl, he didn't think he could handle a teenage girl. Funny how things changed once he had a girl. Do you feel the same as Spencer or would you like a girl somewhere down the line? You guys planning on adding a fourth soon? You don't have to answer that I realize it is probably to personal a question for a blog.

I LOVE ROLLER SKATING!!! I miss it so much. I haven't seen a skating rink in a long time! I went when I was dating Matt, but that was the last time & that was in CA. How fun of a night. Im sure I would have joined you in the quad old school roller skates.

OK, that is hysterical!! By the way, you are not amazon woman, Ashlee and Emily both just happen to be more vertically challenged:) What is funny is that i have been thinking about getting into skating of some sort again(post baby of course) and saw that some rinks offer stroller skating during the day..how cool would that be?? But, Lacey is right, we would all have to watch out for Andrea..she is killer on skates!!

Not that I speak from experience since I only have one kid but I remember when my sister Natalie had her third, and I remember her saying 3 was much harder than 2, and a much bigger adjustment. My family seems to have the opposite issue too many girls... my mom wants another grandson so badly, the tally right now is 5 girls to one boy. When the time comes I hope you get your girl.

I love roller skating- but I haven't been in sooo long. The kid's school has a skating party once a month, but we can never go- I am sure I would look awful skating, too! I love that you still can be a roller derby girl!

How awesome!! I love roller skating! But, the only way I have gotten to do it recently is with my kids for school parties- just not the same. What a fun girls night out activity! :)

Cute post Katie. Looks like fun. I bet that brought back memories! I can't remember the last time I went roller skating.

You look so cute. I love your top. You don't look like an amazon woman at all. I always feel the same way though when I see a pic of me with my friends. Besides Kelly, I think I am at least 3 or 4 inches taller than most of them. Just remember, tall is beautiful amazon woman!

Seriously looks like so much fun! I want to go next time!

I think it's funny you think of yourself as Amazon woman - since I'm short, I look at you and get jealous every time! If only my legs would stretch past their 5 ft. 2 length!

How fun!! My favorite days of skating where in college when we used to dress up and go disco skating. I miss that. What a fun girls night. I will have to purpose that to my friends and see if they go for it. You do look cute.
