Costume Contest

Now that Halloween is just 6 weeks away, I feel I can legitimately start blogging about it. The truth is I've been dreaming up this years Halloween costumes since about last November. I love Halloween and my favorite part is the costumes...designing them, making them, dressing my kids in them and wearing them myself. With at least three costumes to make this year, It's time to make the decision and get started. The problem is making the decision. Over the past couple weeks, I've been asking the boys what they want to be (big mistake) and it changes every day. By the time Halloween rolls around, their costume is not going to be what they want. I had a couple great ideas myself. I shouldn't have asked and just made. I'm a huge fan of coordinating costumes...last year we all went as the classic spooky Halloween characters and the year before Parker and Reid were a pirate and a parrot.

Re-wearing is always an option. The most economical, but not one I'm a huge proponent of just because of my love for costumes. Reid should fit into Parker's monster costume from last year.

And really, Reid will fit just as well into this pirate costume from two years ago.

To go along with that, Gray could easily wear Reid's old parrot costume.

Although, if there was ever a costume to re-wear, this would be it. With a few adaptations, I'm sure Grady could wear Park's old Elvis costume.

This is one I came up with last winter. I think I'd love sewing Parker and Reid some "Wild Thing" costumes and a little wolf suit for Gray. How cute would that be?

Earlier this summer we watched Alvin and the Chipmunks and I couldn't think of a better costume for my crazies.

And I've always thought my kiddos would make cute little 1930's golfers.

But when I ask the boys, this is what they've come up with...

Various X-Men

Magneto

Batman and the Joker

Spiderman and Doc Oc

Willie Wonka...I think this would be a fun one.

The Mahna Mahna Monster...Reid came up with this one. It really suits him. I've you've ever witnessed his morning hair, you'd know why. I LOVE this idea.

The rest of the Muppets

War Machine

Iron Man

All three of the boys from Fantastic Four

Captain America...If I'm going to do a superhero, this one would be fun.

And the list of superheroes goes on forever and I'm not looking up pictures of any more.

So what do you think? What's your favorite? What I really want to know is which of these costumes is going to win a contest (since we totally got jipped at the ward Halloween party last year.) Do I let my kids pick or make them be what I choose?

***Feel free to use any of these ideas. My boys obviously can't be all these things this year.

I, too, am in love with Halloween!! I love choosing costumes. And when I say I choose them, I literally mean I choose them. I pick what I want my kids to be and then I talk them into the costume. So far, it has worked every year. I am meeting that with a little resistance this year, but this is not a fight I will give up on easily!! Bring on the monsters and the candy corn!!!
I can't wait to see what your boys are.

You only have a few more years of truly being able to convince your kids what to be. Soon enough, they won't want to have ANYTHING to do with your suggestions. So I say, go for the ones YOU want them to be and YOU want ot make. I still love the 1930's golfers.

Katie, you have such a wonderfully creative mind. I wish I enjoyed making costumes. I in fact HATE halloween. I hate dressing up, I always have and I have no patience to make anything cute. My poor kids.

I am agreeing with your Mom's advice though, you should go with what you want this year, because she's right. More years than now will they want to be only what they want, not what you suggest.

I do love the Alvin and the chipmunks costume ideas. You or Spencer could be Alvin, and the kids could all be chipmunks. But that's probably not as fun as being a superhero! Good luck with your decisions!

I say the chipmunks..because if you have more kids this may be the last year you could do it...plus it would be adorable.

I saw the cutest golfer costume for a girl and I almost bought it for Olivia...I have no idea yet what I am going to do for her and Boss.

I loved seeing some of your creations again. I was looking forward to it for a few months. I love the Elvis but I think its best when used by the full blown stance (so I'd wait until Grady can stand in it.) I like the idea of Where the Wild Things Are and I especially love the idea of the golfers. I too can picture your kids in that and love it. Can't wait to see what you decide!

I say YOU choose. By the middle of grade school, that option will be ending. Enjoy it while you can. I can't wait to see your choices. Have fun!

I let mine pick0but I try to guide slightly into what they have been into the most throughout the year!

I love the chipmunks, but the Wild Things would probally win! If you get bored I have a little girl who would love your talents for her costume!!

I too LOVE Halloween and am so excited. First of all, that Elvis costume is the cutest I have ever seen. They are all so cute though. I love the Chipmunk idea, more for the reason that you have 3 boys and it just works and would be sooo cute! Some cute ideas, I am sure what ever you choose (or your boys) :) will be great! Can't wit to see pictures :)

My vote is with Alvin and the Chipmunks! That would be just SO cute! And I also agree with most everyone... YOU decide, because soon you won't be able to anymore. I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Love the wild things, I would just hope your judges would know who they were. The chipmunks, so cute and recognizable!

Well if you were to pick for them I think the chipmunks costumes would be TOTALLY CUTE!!!! I love that idea for 3 little boys! But I think you might want to let them pick??? I donno??? That is a hard one, good luck with that!

chipmunks seem to be leading the pack. However, I like the idea of willy wonka and 2 umpa lumpas.

That's funny, because my boys asked to be Alvin and the Chipmunks this year! I'm so not a seamstress, so I'm still trying to figure out how to do it. And I'm sure we'll have some fighting over who gets to be Alvin, although we already know that Quade will be Theodore with his huge chipmunk cheeks.

Willy Wonka with some umpa loompas would be hilarious! We had a friend whose little boy was an umpa loompa, and it was the best costume I've ever seen. It for sure would win a contest (where are you entering this contest anyway?).

You are so creative. I'm sure what ever you pick will be wonderful and most likely win any contest. I'm excited to see what you choose.

Leave it to the boys to pick out any "fill in the blank" super hero...Ryan wants to be Darth Vadar...so I will be Princess Leah, seth, hans solo, and ethan yoda.... we'll see if it actually happens! so fun!

Thanks Toots! The quilts that I just posted for Fall on my blog were made when I was a newbie quilter. I bet you would like quilting!

I never let William decide. I'm SO not into Halloween. Basically William just wears Jacob's hand-me-down costumes... so he'll be Tigger (again).
I think the Wild Things would be SO cute... but the Chimpmunks is a way cute idea...

Yeah!! Another Halloween lover! I'm crazy about Halloween, and I think I've had my last year of coordinating costumes. Last year we were The Wizard of Oz (Me; scarecrow, sean, tinman, libby; dorothy, Ella; Glinda, and baby Lucy was Lion) It was so stinkin cute!
They've had this years costumes planned since last halloween. and Ella is already planning for us all to be super heroes next year. Maybe, I'll get one more year of coordination!

My vote is for Wild Things. That would be way cute, and differant!

I go for Wild Things, that is such a classic book and I doubt anyone else would come up with that idea. I say do it while you are still in control. My husband still loves super heros so let them do that when they are older.

I have always wanted to dress up my kids as oompa loompas from Willie Wonka. I dont think this will happen ever because Ari is convinced that she wants to be a dog with Devynn, she definately has an opinion. I think your boys would be great oompa loompas. That's my vote.

What a blast!! :) You are so good at that kind of thing! I have no doubt whatever you pick will be awesome- Good luck! :)

Choose while you still can!! Mine passed that stage a while ago, and now I have no control!! I remember the days of matching Alex and Leah, and it was so fun- so soak it up while you can!
Can't wait to see what you do!!
IT will for sure be amazing!!
