Messy Gooey Boy Cookies

We decorated sugar cookies for Family Night last night. It was fun to decorate cookies sometime other than a holiday. Sugar cookies get made about twice a year at our house. Always for Valentines and then either Halloween, Forth of July or Christmas. But that's about it. Yesterday we made them just for fun. A little blue and green food coloring and a box of Scooby Doo sprinkles (thanks Grandma) turned our cookies into the biggest batch of messy, gooey, boy cookies I've ever seen.

Sugar cookies are quite possibly my favorite cookies to eat, but making them is a whole different story. I was cookied out long before we decorated last night. It was like four separate activities.
  • 10:00am - Making the dough...letting it sit in the fridge.
  • 2:00pm - Rolling the dough and baking the cookies....letting them cool.
  • 5:00pm - Mixing the frosting.
  • 6:30pm - FINALLY decorating.

Seriously, my whole day revolved around these cookies. One baking activity a month is more than I need to satisfy my baking desires. Four in one day was WAY too much. I don't really get into baking...especially with kids around. The crazies LOVED the decorating part which made it all worth it. Parker even talked me into getting out my frosting bags and tips.

Reid showed up to decorate cookies shirtless...with a cape and sunglasses. He sat down at the table and said, "This is my decorating cape."

Parker's comment was, "We're the cookie seller guys. But...we're going to sell these cookies to our own selves."

The only thing Gray did was grunt for more cookies when he ran out.

I was way too consumed with the mess these three crazies were making to get any pictures of the action.

How fun... I love baking. Not cooking. I havent decorated cookies in forever though. I love it that they were "boy" cookies.

What a good way to spend the day baking, but then again that is coming from someone who loves to bake. I loved Reids and Parkers remarks about the cookies. They did look very good I wouldnt want to give them up either.

That's great! And I love that Reid showed up in a cape! And I too would have been too worried about the massive mess being made to take pictures.

Sugar cookies are definitely an all day process, but so very yummy! Those cookies look beautiful! I totally get your comment on my post about "getting frustrated and sending them out..." I have done that too! :) There is certainly nothing like throwing a bunch of icing and decorations on a thick sugar cookie and eating it! :) Sounds like a great evening!

That's so much fun. I too don't make sugar cookies often for that reason. Too time consuming! They look cute though and sound like they were yummy. Your boys are so creative and they say the cutest things!

It is funny how diffrent boys vs. girls are. It doesn't matter what you are doing. I am a baking fanatic, so we do cookies a lot and sugar cookies are, by far, the favorite of my children. I wish I could have seena pic of your little guy in his cape and glasses. That's hilarious.

I also love sugar cookies but it is way to much of a processes for me, and I even love baking!!! I have a very short attention span.

They look yummy to me!

Fun! I made sugar cookies yesterday too. But mine were a little different! No Scooby Doo's, but still fun and tasty too!

Yum! I agree sugar cookies are way too much work. But they are so good and fun to make with the kids. I end up doing most of the decorating because Ethan is too interested in eating the frosting than decorating so he gets a little bowl of frosting, a plastic knife and one cookie and that lasts the entire time and Lauren is just fine decorating one or two and then just wants to do the sprinkles. Your kids are so cute and I bet they had so much fun. Great idea for family night!

Awesome BOY cookies! And I gotta give you some props for making the dough. I have to admit I would have been buying that already made Pillsbury rolled dough in the refrigerated section at the grocery store. I am so not a baker. Way to tedious for me.
Fun thing to do with your kids though. Sounds like they loved it. Way to go Mom.

jealous am I! Autumn can't do cookie dough or frosting so we don't get to do that! I used to do stuff like that with Austin all the time!

You know I was thinking the other day that same thing- that the poor sugar cookie only makes his aperance about twice a year and that they are so good they deserve to be made more than that! I once heard this comedian cracking on the lonesome sugar cookie and he said, "Hey sugar cookie! What's a sugar cookie without sugar???? A CRACKER!" I thought it was sooo mean. I love to eat sugar cookies, but you just reminded my why I don't make them. I think sugar cookies would make more of an appearnce if there was more plopping cookie dough onto the sheet involved.....with me being stuck indoor today though...maybe I should take some tylenol for the pre-emtive back pain and indulge my children in the all day process???? MAYBE.
