And when I say 80's, I'm really talkin' late 80's and early 90's.
I bought a different brand of hairspray this week. It is a brand of hair product I haven't used since my days of permed hair and big bangs. I'm amazed that after 20 years, it still smells the same. From the first spray, a flood of memories came rushing to the forefront of my brain. It was fun.
I was looking for some pictures of myself with some good 80's hair. I'm a little young to have really gotten into the big hair craze of the 80's, but I did get regular perms throughout my childhood. I know by sixth grade I was not only fixing my own hair, but starting to pay attention to style. I wore my bangs mostly curled backwards with a little curled under. I thought it was hot stuff.
I wore my bangs like that for my 6th grade school picture AND I wore a vest that was plaid on one half and a different plaid on the other half. Too bad I don't have that picture in my archives for your viewing pleasure. I don't actually have any pictures with my bangs curled in this manner. But I did round up a few perm pictures for you.
This was probably 1990. Our most horrible family picture ever. I'm pretty sure it never even made it on the wall. But if my hair isn't a sign of the times, look at my mom's.
Aren't my brothers studs? Check out Mike's skinny tie. And do I spy suspenders under Jeff's sweet jacket? Why were they dressed so much cooler than me?
It's all about the hair 'wings.'
Why yes, my shorts are made from the same exact fabric as my over-sized shirt. And yes, my shirt is tucked into them. My brothers are again dressed cooler...I'm noticing a theme.
No hair commentary, but I LOVED that dress.
Aren't school pictures fantastically horribly?
And what's going on in this one? Did I think brushing out my perm was a good idea? At least I got it right with the bangs.
I chose this one only because I'm appropriately holding hairspray...
...and because of the neon swimming suit in the background.

I'm just looking at Dad's oversized '80s glasses and thinking, "THOSE were in style?"
what??? What is wrong with a side ponytail??
Your flashback pictures are always so great. I think my hair looked exactly like that at those ages too. I totally rocked the bangs half curled back and a little curled down.
I'm thinking surely those styles can not possibly make a come back.
yes... but hair and clothes aside... weren't we cute little girls?
What a hoot! I remember my girls looking the same way, in the same clothes!!!
I don't even remember that family picture...probably it was in the reject pile and you swiped it. We ALL look hideous. Get it off of the World Wide Web!!!!!
I loved looking at these pictures Kate. And I think your Dad looks exactly like the Dad on Dennis the Menace in your family picture. Doesn't he? With the big glasses? You guys looks great. My favorite is Jeff in the suspenders. Sweet.
Love all the pictures. Seriously reminded me of so many of my own pictures.
I LOVE these pictures....so fun! I totally remember in Middle School curling my hair like that and spraying it like crazy to get it to stay. Then, I would go into the bathroom as soon as I got to school and there would always be a crowd of girls re-spraying their hair. It is surprising (aside from the big hair...) how much your mom looks like you do now in the family picture!!!
Those pics gave me the laugh I have been waiting for this morning!! Thank you!
I have so many of the same, except I have no excuses for the bad clothing- I was much older than you at the same time we were wearing those cool clothes!
Love the hair- you rocked every style-
you go girl!
And your mom is gorgeous no matter what her hair is doing too!
You brave woman, my 80's photos are under lock and key forever. (I am a bit older though, so my 80's were not as sweet looking as yours!)
Aqua net...aqua net..please say it was aqua net! I also love the fact that you thought it was a good idea to wear overalls for your school picture....btw you totally look like your mom in that family picture!
Styles are so funny. I remember loving the big floral dresses too. And the hair where you said you got your bangs right-I swear everyone had the same bottom half-unbrushed looking. I love your brothers big poses-you look pretty giddy too. fun!
I remember you wearing overalls in junior high -- well into the 90's. You inspired me to get a sweet turquoise plaid pair of my own. Ugh, what were we thinking. I'm glad you didn't sneak any photos of me into this lot. I see some other friends weren't so lucky.
